This is a very attractive Kentucky rifle. The high quality curly maple stock appears to be all original and is nicely incised carved behind the cheekpiece . The .50 cal. 44″ barrel is signed in script S. Miller . The original  lock is signed Ketland & Co.  Another early feature of this rifle is the curl at the bottom of the trigger. The patchbox is the classic whales tail design with a feather in it, the meaning of which is unknown to me. This beautiful rifle is in extremely fine condition throughout . It has developed a very pleasing smooth patina overall.  Samuel Miller  worked in Hamburg , Pa. from 1823 until 1849.  Later he relocated to the upper Susquehanna area.
